Samsø Municipality

Samsø municipality is a municipality (Danish, kommune) in Region Midtjylland on the island of Samsø in central Denmark. The island is located in the Kattegat between the Danish mainland of Jutland and the island of Zealand (Sjælland). The municipality includes the small island of Hjortholm off its northeast coast, and it covers an area of 114 km². It has a total population of 4.085 (2008). Its mayor is Carsten Bruun, a member of the Venstre (Liberal Party) political party.

The site of its municipal council is the town of Tranebjerg.

Because Samsø is an island municipality, Odder to the west on the Jutland peninsula is its only neighboring municipality. To the east of the island is Samsø Belt (Samsø Bælt), the strait that separates the island of Samsø from the island of Zealand.

Ferry service connects the municipality near the town of Sælvig west-northwest over the Kattegat to the town of Hov on the Jutland peninsula, and at the town of Kolby Kås east-southeast over the Great Belt to the city of Kalundborg on Zealand.

Samsø municipality was not merged with other municipalities by January 1, 2007 as the result of nationwide Kommunalreformen ("The Municipal Reform" of 2007).
